How often should I return home teaching English?
Anyone whose lived abroad as an expat has found that most people have their own individual rhythm for how often they want to return to their home country for a visit. Depending on where you are, how comfortable you are, and the pace of your job can all play a role. If you’re in a well paid international school role in Europe and your home country is the UK, you may think nothing of a jaunt home for the weekend to do some laundry. On the other hand, if you’re a 12 hour flight from your home country and tickets are over a thousand dollars, you might be lucky to make the trip once every year or once every two years. It’s worth weighing up the factors, and it can even be quite nice having a long stay away from home only to return – after all, absence makes the heart grow fonder. On average, it seems that it’s best to get back at least once a year or once every two years, just to stay in touch, see friends and family, and take care of paperwork. Thankfully technology has made the difficulties of being away from family and friends easier, and while it’s always still hard being away for a long time, it makes it all the better when you get your trip back.
